Ah, To Be a Fellow Again!

Mary C. Curtis, NF ’06, is one of the 24 inaugural social media fellows chosen by the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism. Nearly 600 journalists applied for this three-month fellowship. It includes a week of strategic hands-on training and exploration of emerging news models before coaching begins on social media projects of their choice. Based in Charlotte, N.C., Curtis is a correspondent for AOL’s PoliticsDaily.com and contributes to National Public Radio, TheRoot.com and Nieman Watchdog. Read more

Columbia, Nieman Foundation announce winners of the 2011 Lukas Prize Project

Awards March 30, 2011

The recipients of the 2011 J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards for exceptional nonfiction include authors Eliza Griswold (a 2007 Nieman Fellow), Isabel Wilkerson and Alex Tizon. The awards will be presented on Tuesday, May 3, at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. The Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard co-administer the awards. Read more

Headliner Awards honor several Nieman alumni

Four Nieman alumni were among the many journalists recognized by the National Press Club's 2011 Headliner Awards: Kevin Cullen (NF ’03), James E. Causey (NF ’08), Stuart Watson (NF ’08), and John Harwood (NF ’90). The National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry. Read more

Nieman curator weighs in on digital censorship

Nieman curator Bob Giles writes about the difficulties Chinese blogger Michael Anti is having publishing under his preferred name. Anti, a 2008 Nieman Fellow whose government-recorded name is Zhao Jing, has used his pen name professionally for years. That changed quickly in January however, when Facebook cancelled his account without warning and deleted all his contacts, due to a “real name policy.” The Committee to Protect Journalists describes the move as complicit with “China’s growing attempt to stifle the free flow of news and opinion.” Read more

Michael J. Berens wins Worth Bingham Prize for “Seniors for Sale”

Reporter Michael J. Berens of The Seattle Times is winner of the 2010 Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism for his comprehensive six-part series “Seniors for Sale: Exploiting the aged and frail in Washington’s adult family homes.” The $20,000 Bingham Prize will be presented at the Nieman Foundation on April 14, 2011. Tim Giago retires from the newsroom

Tim Giago, Editor/Publisher of Native Sun News will put down his pen and retire from the newsroom April 1, three years to the day after he launched this “last and final newspaper.” He will remain on the newspapers masthead as Editor Emeritus. Giago is a 1991 fellow. Read more
