A.C. Thompson received the 2011 I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence on Oct. 4 at Boston University. Thompson is a staff reporter for ProPublica whose work frequently exposes social injustice and the abuse of power. His reporting on events in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was critical to the uncovering of a string of racially motivated killings of unarmed civilians by New Orleans police officers. Raquel Rutledge and her Milwaukee Journal Sentinel colleague Rick Barrett were named Silver Award winners Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the annual Barlett & Steele contest, which honors outstanding investigative reporting focused on business. The two were recognized for their story on how federal regulators failed to prevent tainted alcohol wipes from getting into hospitals and medicine cabinets across the country. The editorship of The Namibian changed hands when founding Editor Gwen Lister, after 26 years at the helm of the biggest newspaper in the country, passed on the torch to Tangeni Amupadhi on Friday, Sept. 30. Amupadhi was appointed editor-designate in April, after serving as editor of Insight magazine, which he co-founded in 2004, and has worked closely with Lister over the past six months before being confirmed in the position. Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism awarded Anniston (Ala.) Star publisher H. Brandt Ayers its prestigious Carr Van Anda Award Monday, Sept. 26, citing his outstanding career achievements to society and the communications field. "Brandt Ayers is a bit of a living legend in the American newspaper industry, and is perhaps the best-known publisher/editor of what we often refer to as ‘community newspaperss’." said Professor Bill Reader. Murray Seeger, a Los Angeles Times foreign correspondant who served as Moscow bureau chief in the early 1970s and was later director of information for the AFL-CIO, has died at 82. Seeger wrote for Nieman Reports many times over the years, and served as associate editor of the magazine in the ‘90s. He was a 1962 Nieman Fellow. Read more
