9:00 – 10:30 a.m. | Reporting for story: A deep dive into techniques for reporting that goes beyond gathering quotes and instead gathers the right raw material for relevant anecdotes, description, character development, and writing in scenes. | FOIA Basics: Learn the basics of public records, including how to word your requests, what you can ask for, and tips on speeding up the process. | |

10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. | Profiles: A continuation of the “Reporting for Story” module focusing specifically on developing character in either short bursts (paragraph profiles) or full profiles. | FOIA Advanced: Learn advanced techniques for public records, such as how to get around FERPA, tips for reverse engineering agency data stores, and information specific to particular beats. | |

1:00 – 2:45 p.m. | Story structures: Includes a short list of go-to structures that can be applied efficiently and effectively to almost any story. | Data Management and Analysis: Learn how to sort, analyze, and clean data, including an introduction to pivot tables, Open Refine, and Workbench, as well as some basic best practices when it comes to building a data analysis project. | |

A chance to practice new methodologies for involving the public in decision-making and reporting, and see examples of innovative work newsrooms are doing not just for the public, but with them. |
