Reporting in Dire Circumstances

The plan was for Roanoke (Va.) Times reporter Beth Macy, NF ’10, to follow doctors on an aid trip to Haiti months after an earthquake struck. She was doing that when a cholera outbreak sparked riots across the country and the medical team had to be evacuated. The harrowing experience became part of “Life and Death in the Time of Cholera,” a winner of the Associated Press Managing Editors award for international perspective. Read more

Maria Balinska wins Global Digital News Frontier grant

The International Women's Media Foundation announced Feb. 16 the winners of the inaugural Women Entrepreneurs in the Global Digital News Frontier grants. Each grantee will receive $20,000 to launch innovative new media enterprises. Latitude, conceived by Maria Balinska, will approach international journalism by exploring connections between Americans and the rest of the world and promoting a deeper understanding of how the U.S. fits into the global news narrative. Chin’ono documentary up for BANFF award

"A Violent Response," a documentary by 2010 Global Health Fellow Hopewell Chin'ono, has been nominated for a BANFF World Television Award. The film—a look at Zimbabwe's post-election violence—will be aired in June on the BBC in the UK to mark the anniversary of the 2008 Zimbabwean elections. Read more

Award-winning journalist María Hinojosa recently interviewed two Nieman Fellows for “One-on-One.” Alfredo Corchado, a 2009 Nieman Fellow, talks about why he risks his life every day to report the truth about Mexico's increasingly violent drug war. Anita Snow, a 2010 Nieman Fellow, describes life of a journalist in today’s Cuba and offers predictions for the future. Read more
