Nieman Foundation announces the 77th class of Nieman Fellows

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism has selected 24 journalists as members of the 77th class of Nieman Fellows. The group includes journalists who work around the globe as reporters, editors, columnists, bureau chiefs, digital leaders and news executives in print, broadcast and online media. They will study at Harvard University during the 2014-2015 academic year. Read more

Niemans on Boston Globe team that wins Pulitzer for breaking news coverage

The staff of The Boston Globe, including several Nieman Fellows, has won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. Reporter David Abel, NF ’13, and columnist Kevin Cullen, NF ’03, were among those who covered the bombings and their aftermath. The Globe’s managing editor for news, Christine Chinlund, NF ’98, played a key role in organizing coverage, assisted by Stephen Smith, NF ’00, city editor. David Dahl, NF ’03, was regional editor and Mark Pothier, NF ’01, was deputy business editor at the time. Read more

Sheri Fink, Jill Lepore and Adrienne Berard Are Named Winners of the 2014 J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards

Columbia Journalism School and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University today announced the three winners of the Lukas Prize Project Awards. Sheri Fink, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, has won the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize for her investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Jill Lepore, a prolific author and Harvard University professor who combines her interests in historical research, language and literature, will receive the Mark Lynton History Prize for her biography of Jane Franklin Mecom. Reporter and writer Adrienne Berard has won the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award for her book about the untold story of the first fight for desegregation in Southern schools. Read more

Remembering AP Photographer Anja Niedringhaus, NF ’07

AP photographer and 2007 Nieman Fellow Anja Niedringhaus was shot and killed April 4 by an Afghan police officer while covering the run-up to the elections. In this photo essay from the Spring 2012 Nieman Reports, the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner, who had worked on the frontlines of many major conflicts over the past two decades, reflects on work from her 2012 book “At War.” Read more
