Total FY22 revenue for the Nieman Foundation decreased approximately 6.6% from FY21. The main reasons for the decrease were an almost 80% decrease in current use gifts related to the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Journalism and a decrease of 91% in interest income.

Because Nieman had only three fellows from abroad in FY20, more interest income accrued on the unused balances for the restricted gift income applicable to the named fellowships for international fellows. Those balances were spent down in FY21, resulting in the lower interest income.

The value of our investments increased approximately 6.3% from FY21 to FY22; our balance sheet remains strong, with over $162,000,000 in long-term investments.

In FY21, Nieman received funding for the continuation of the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism; funding for the Abrams Fellowship concluded after FY21.
