Financial Highlights
Total FY21 revenue for the Nieman Foundation increased approximately 2.2% from FY20. The primary reason for the increase was that funding for the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism accounted for approximately 88% of the FY21 current-use gifts and 70% of the FY20 current-use gifts. Half of the FY20 gift was received in FY19, accounting for the large increase in FY19 and large decrease in FY20.
In FY21, Nieman received funding for the continuation of the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism, which was created to support journalists who cover news in underserved communities in the United States. The foundation is grateful to Nieman Advisory Board member Amy Abrams, whose Abrams Foundation has funded these fellowships. Three Abrams Nieman Fellows were selected for both the classes of 2019 and 2020; two fellows were selected for the class of 2022.
The value of our investments increased approximately 26.7% from FY20 to FY21; our balance sheet remains strong, with over $173,000,000 in long-term investments.

These generous donors help fund Nieman Fellowships, publications, journalism events and awards, conferences and other special projects that help educate journalists on campus and around the world.
