FY19 Financial Highlights
Total FY19 revenue for the Nieman Foundation increased approximately 8.1 percent from FY18. Several significant developments included:
- One non-federal sponsored grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
- A 108 percent increase in gifts for current use. Funding for the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Journalism (see more information below) accounted for approximately 65 percent of the FY19 current-use gifts. Nieman also received a $70,000 gift to fund the new Harry M. Davis Nieman Fellowship in Science Journalism, plus approximately $148,000 to fund the Worth Bingham Memorial Fund.
The value of our investments increased approximately 2 percent from FY18 to FY19. Our balance sheet remains strong, with almost $135,000,000 in long-term investments.
In FY19, Nieman received funding for one new fellowship and the continuation of two recently established fellowships:
- The Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism was created to support journalists who cover news in underserved communities in the United States. After their Nieman Fellowship at Harvard, the Abrams Nieman Fellows receive financial support for public service fieldwork that may last up to nine months. The foundation is grateful to Nieman Advisory Board member Amy Abrams, whose Abrams Foundation funds these fellowships. Three Abrams Nieman Fellows were selected for the Nieman classes of 2019 and 2020, and applications are being accepted for spots in the class of 2021.
- The Robert L. Long Nieman Fellowship for Turkish Journalists, offered in partnership with Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF), honors the memory of U.S. journalist, filmmaker and news executive Robert L. Long. The fellowship was established to support any Turkish journalist accepted for a fellowship in the classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021. One fellowship was granted in the class of 2019 and one in the class of 2020.
- The Harry M. Davis Nieman Fellowship in Science Journalism was established by an anonymous donor made on behalf of Ella (Davis) Mazel in memory of her brother, Harry M. Davis, a science journalist and a Nieman Fellow in the class of 1941. The fellowship supports one journalist in the class of 2020 who covers science and natural resources.
