Kirsty Milne, a 2004 Nieman Fellow and former editor of the New Statesman, has died. She joined the magazine in 1993 after it merged with her former paper, New Society. Milne wrote reviews and features for the NS and other publications, including the Times, Telegraph and a politics column for The Scotsman. She also worked at the BBC and as a freelance writer, including time as a theater critic.
In addition to her year as a Nieman Fellow, she spent time at Harvard’s Center for European Studies studying the impact of new protest movements and populist campaigns on politics and journalism. She was also a research fellow in early modern English and the classics at Wolfson College, Oxford. Milne was the first Nieman fellow from Scotland.
