John Carroll, NF’ 72, former L.A. Times editor

John Carroll a 1972 Nieman Fellow and one of the country’s most influential journalists, died in Kentucky on June 14, 2015 at the age of 73.

As editor at The Los Angeles Times from 2000-2005, he oversaw the paper’s record acquisition of 13 Pulitzer Prizes in just five years. While leading the paper, he focused on investigative reporting and beat coverage and restructured paper sections. He also fought demands to cut staff and defended strong journalistic principles and a free press at a time when digital technology was disrupting the way newsrooms operate.

Carroll joined The Times after a distinguished career at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Kentucky’s Lexington Herald-Leader and the Baltimore Sun. A graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania, his first job was as a reporter at The Providence Journal-Bulletin.

After leaving The Times in 2005, Carroll taught at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center on the Media, Politics and Public Policy and chaired the board of the News Literacy Project.
