Kenneth Freed, a 1978 Nieman Fellow who worked as an editor and reporter for The Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times and the Omaha World-Herald, died on June 7, 2021.

Freed attended the University of Nebraska, where received his undergraduate and law degrees. He began his journalism career in 1963 as a staff writer and editor for The Associated Press in Charleston, West Virginia. In 1971, he moved on to cover international news when he became a diplomatic correspondent for the AP. His tenure as a Los Angeles Times foreign correspondent began in 1978 and took him around the world, where he served as the chief of bureaus in Iran, Argentina, El Salvador, the Caribbean and Toronto, Canada.

In 1996, Freed  became a visiting professional at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked with students one-on-one rather than in a classroom. He later spent time as a Knight International Press Fellow in Lebanon. He also was the Scripps-Howard visiting professional at Ohio University during the 2001-02 academic year.

Freed is survived by his wife Sandra Freed; daughter Stacy Freed; son Geoffrey Freed and his wife June Rutkowski-Freed; granddaughter Eleanor Freed; sisters Judy Freed Kendall and Patti Freed Schrichfield and her husband Rick Schrichfield; and numerous cousins and nephews.
