Nieman curator weighs in on digital censorship

Nieman curator Bob Giles writes about the difficulties Chinese blogger Michael Anti is having publishing under his preferred name. Anti, a 2008 Nieman Fellow whose government-recorded name is Zhao Jing, has used his pen name professionally for years. That changed quickly in January however, when Facebook cancelled his account without warning and deleted all his contacts, due to a “real name policy.” The Committee to Protect Journalists describes the move as complicit with “China’s growing attempt to stifle the free flow of news and opinion.” Read more

Harvard’s Rev. Peter Gomes dies at 68

Rev. Professor Peter J. Gomes, a longtime friend of the Nieman Foundation and host to decades of Nieman classes in his home on campus has died. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard, passed away on Feb. 28 from complications from a stroke. Read more

Nieman’s 2010 Annual Report

The Nieman Foundation’s 2010 annual report is now online. It highlights the many partnerships the foundation has formed in the interest of strengthening journalism worldwide through Nieman fellowships, print and online projects, conferences and the journalism awards we present each year. The theme of the report this year is collaboration. The foundation owes a deep debt of gratitude for the success of Nieman programs to the support we receive from the Harvard faculty and administration, journalism organizations, contributors, funders, alumni and our own talented, dedicated staff. Nieman Curator Bob Giles to Retire

Bob Giles, curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard for the past decade, will retire at the end of the academic year in June 2011. “It is not easy to leave a great institution and the wonderful people who make it so, but this is a good time for my wife, Nancy, and me to begin a new chapter in our lives,” Giles, 77, said. Nieman Foundation, Pulitzer Center join forces to strengthen global health reporting

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting have joined forces to support international reporting initiatives with a special focus on global health coverage.  The partnership will also bring Pulitzer Center journalists to Harvard University for presentations and discussions on underreported international stories and provide an annual workshop for Nieman Fellows.
