Investigative reporter Pamela Colloff wins Louis M. Lyons Award

The current class of Nieman Fellows at Harvard University has selected Pamela Colloff, an executive editor at the Texas Monthly, as this year’s recipient of the Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism. Colloff was chosen for her tenacious investigations into wrongful convictions, which have exposed deep flaws in the criminal justice system. Nieman offers new resources for journalists covering immigration

With generous support from the MacArthur Foundation, the Nieman Foundation organized a workshop in late October for reporters, editors and new media voices who cover immigration. Designed for those who need to better understand the complex economic, labor and legal issues surrounding the topic, the three-day gathering convened a diverse group of experienced journalists, economists, labor leaders, law enforcement officials, researchers and academics. Muckraking Goes Global: Nieman’s new e-book

In conjunction with the 2013 Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Rio de Janeiro, the Nieman Foundation has published a new e-book, Muckraking Goes Global: The Future of Cross-Border Investigative Journalism, which examines the achievements and challenges of investigative journalists reporting stories on subjects of global interest. Published in English and Spanish, the e-book includes original content as well as articles published in the Spring 2013 issue of Nieman Reports. Read more

Nieman Foundation and Berkman Center name joint fellows

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society have selected two journalists as the 2013-2014 Nieman-Berkman Fellows in Journalism Innovation. NYT Reporter Sam Dolnick Receives 2012 Worth Bingham Prize

New York Times reporter Sam Dolnick has won the 2012 Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism for his three-part series Unlocked: Inside New Jersey’s Halfway Houses. During an exhaustive 10-month investigation of New Jersey’s privately run halfway houses, Dolnick discovered a broken and horribly flawed correctional system in which gang activity, drug use, sexual assaults and other violent behavior were commonplace and where lax security led to hundreds of annual escapes. While at large, some fugitives committed violent crimes, including murder, yet the state failed to punish the halfway house operators responsible for the runaways. Read more

The project kicks off with Dan Sinker and Erin Kissane of Source, a Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project, discussing how they built a gathering place for news developers.
