Update: Paul Salopek, NF ’12, and his trek across the globe

2012 Nieman Visiting Fellow Paul Salopek and his epic 21,000-mile walk around the world are the focus of National Geographic’s December 2013 cover story. In To Walk the World, the first in a series, Salopek writes “Walking is falling forward. Each step we take is an arrested plunge, a collapse averted, a disaster braked. In this way, to walk becomes an act of faith. We perform it daily: a two-beat miracle—an iambic teetering, a holding on and letting go. For the next seven years I will plummet across the world.” He is tracing the ancient paths of human migration and telling the stories of the world along the way.
