In a new interview with Harvard Magazine, Pulitzer-Prize winning author and Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin explains what drew him to research the 25 wrought-iron gates of Harvard. His interest in the subject as a 2013 Nieman fellow turned into a January-term class for undergraduates and ultimately, a new Nieman e-book, “The Gates of Harvard Yard: The Complete Story, in Words and Pictures, of a Great University’s Iconic Portals,” which is due out in August.

Giving back to the Harvard community they call home this academic year, three Nieman Fellows recently offered a January Term course on Harvard's historic gates. Blair Kamin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, has been chosen as the 2012 winner of Urban Communication Foundation's Gene Burd Urban Journalism Award. He will be honored at the UCF's annual Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication conference in Chicago on August 10. Kamin is a 2013 Nieman Fellow. Read more
