FY20 Financial Highlights
Total FY20 revenue for the Nieman Foundation decreased approximately 4.4% from FY19. Several significant developments affecting revenue included:
- One non-federal sponsored grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
- A 60% decrease in gifts for current use. Funding for the Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism (see more information below) accounted for approximately 70% of the FY20 current-use gifts. Half of the FY20 gift was received in FY19, accounting for the large increase in FY19 and large decrease in FY20. In FY19, Nieman also received a $70,000 gift to fund the Harry M. Davis Nieman Fellowship in Science Journalism, plus approximately $148,000 to fund the Worth Bingham Memorial Fund; similar amounts were not received in FY20.
The value of our investments increased approximately 1.4% from FY19 to FY20; our balance sheet remains strong, with almost $137,000,000 in long-term investments.
In FY20, Nieman received funding for one new fellowship and the continuation of two others:
- The Abrams Nieman Fellowship for Local Investigative Journalism was created to support journalists who cover news in underserved communities in the United States. After completing their studies at Harvard, the Abrams Nieman Fellows receive financial support for public service fieldwork that may last up to nine months. The foundation is grateful to Nieman Advisory Board member Amy Abrams, whose Abrams Foundation funds these fellowships. Three Abrams Nieman Fellows were selected for both the classes of 2019 and 2020, and two fellows were chosen for the class of 2021.
- The Robert L. Long Nieman Fellowship for Turkish Journalists, offered in partnership with Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF), honors the memory of U.S. journalist, filmmaker and news executive Robert L. Long. The fellowship was established to support any Turkish journalist accepted for a fellowship in the classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021. One fellowship was granted in the class of 2019 and one in the class of 2020.
- The Harry M. Davis Nieman Fellowship in Science Journalism was established by an anonymous donor made on behalf of Ella (Davis) Mazel in memory of her brother, Harry M. Davis, a science journalist and a Nieman Fellow in the class of 1941. The fellowship supported one journalist in the class of 2020.
