Documentary filmmaker Michael Kirk, NF ’80, who produced 60 Frontline investigations and won two Peabody awards, was selected to receive the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s First Amendment Award at its conference in August. Former New York Times columnist and two-time Pulitzer winner Anthony Lewis, NF ’57, will be given the Louis P. and Evelyn Smith First Amendment Award from the Ford Hall Forum at Suffolk University in Boston this month. Reporter Michael J. Berens of The Seattle Times is winner of the 2010 Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism for his comprehensive six-part series “Seniors for Sale: Exploiting the aged and frail in Washington’s adult family homes.” The $20,000 Bingham Prize will be presented at the Nieman Foundation on April 14, 2011. The Nieman Foundation will present the Louis M. Lyons Award for Conscience and Integrity in Journalism to Somali reporter Mohamed Olad Hassan on Thursday, November 18, 2010. Nieman Fellows in the class of 2011 selected Hassan, a senior correspondent and writer for the BBC World Service and The Associated Press, in recognition of his courageous reporting from a perilous region and for his enduring commitment to the people of Somalia. The Nieman Foundation has selected 25 journalists from the United States and abroad to join the 73rd class of Nieman Fellows. The group includes journalists who work in print, radio, television, photography, filmmaking and online. Read more
The recipients of the 2010 J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards for exceptional nonfiction include David Finkel’s up-close examination of the human costs of making war; James Davidson’s study of the homoerotic culture of ancient Greece; and an account of life in inner city Newark, N.J., focusing on the efforts of an ex-con and former drug dealer to help impoverished children in the city’s most depressed neighborhood, by Jonathan Schuppe. Former Nieman Curator and 1989 Nieman Fellow Bill Kovach received the 2010 W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism from the National Press Foundation on February 16. Read more
