Blair Kamin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, has been chosen as the 2012 winner of Urban Communication Foundation's Gene Burd Urban Journalism Award. He will be honored at the UCF's annual Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication conference in Chicago on August 10. Kamin is a 2013 Nieman Fellow. Read more
Katie King — a Nieman Foundation advisory board member and a 1994 Nieman Fellow — will be inducted to the University of Washingon Communication Alumni Hall of Fame Oct. 16. King is a writer, editor, literary translator and digital media executive whose 20 plus-year career includes working as a foreign correspondent, documentary producer, digital story-teller, business leader and journalism professor. Kael Alford has been named the winner of the 2012 Michael P. Smith Fund For Documentary Photography Award. The $5,000 award is presented annually by the New Orleans Photo Alliance to a Gulf Coast photographer whose work “combines artistic excellence and a sustained commitment to a long-term cultural documentary project.” Read more
Andrew Meldrum, a longtime editor and foreign correspondent with extensive experience in Africa, has been appointed assistant Africa editor for The Associated Press. Meldrum, a 2008 Nieman Fellow, will be based at AP’s Africa regional headquarters in Johannesburg. Read more
Ju-Don Roberts, a 2004 Nieman Fellow, has been promoted to general manager and senior vice president of Everyday Health. In her new role, she will oversee the Web, mobile, social, video and product strategies for EverydayHealth.com. Read more
Richard Dudman has spent his life finding and writing good stories. He has been the Bangor Daily News’ senior contributing editor for the last 12 years, writing more than 1,000 editorials. Friday, June 29, was his last day. A Washington correspondent with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 31 years, Dudman posted stories from around the world, including Argentina, the Middle East, China and Vietnam. He is a 1954 Nieman Fellow. Read more

Mike McGrady, a prizewinning reporter for Newsday who to his chagrin was best known as the mastermind of one of the juiciest literary hoaxes in America died on May 13 at 78. He was a 1969 Nieman Fellow. Read more
