A witness to nation-building in South Sudan

French documentary filmmakers Florence Martin-Kessler, NF ’11, and Anne Poiret have spent the last few years chronicling South Sudan’s rocky road to independence and the many challenges along the way. Catch a sneak preview of their feature-length documentary “State Builders” in the New York Times Op-Doc section and learn “How to Build a Country From Scratch.” State Builders will air later this year on the European cultural television channel ARTE. Stanley Karnow, NF ’58, dies at 87

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and historian Stanley Karnow, a 1958 Nieman Fellow known for his exhaustive and insightful coverage of Southeast Asia, has died at the age of 87. A 1947 graduate of Harvard University, Karnow began his career as a Paris correspondent for Time magazine in the 1950s, reporting on events in Western Europe and North Africa. Read more

Nieman Lab launches weekly Press Publish podcasts

The Nieman Journalism Lab has launched a new weekly podcast series, Press Publish, that will feature conversations with the people who are shaping the future of news. The project kicks off with Dan Sinker and Erin Kissane of Source, a Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project, discussing how they built a gathering place for news developers. In coming weeks, look for episodes with journalists, technologists, business managers, entrepreneurs and academics as they discuss their ideas and projects. Read more

Shelby Scates, NF ’63, dies at 81

Shelby Scates, a 1963 Nieman Fellow and longtime political reporter and columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, died on Jan. 3 at the age of 81. He covered wars and presidential campaigns as well as the ins and outs of Washington state politics. An avid climber, he scaled Mount Rainier nine times, reached the summit of Mt. McKinley and in 1978, covered the first American party to climb K2. Scates was the author of three books and a memoir, “War and Politics by Other Means.” Read more

Larry King, NF ’70, dies at 83

Larry L. King, NF ’70, died on December 20 at the age of 83. A native of Texas and a prolific journalist and author, King was perhaps best known as playwright of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” based on an article he wrote for Playboy magazine. Read more

Nieman announces 2013 Visiting Fellows

The Nieman Foundation has selected three journalists as Visiting Fellows for the 2013 calendar year. Each will spend a period of time at Harvard University to work on a project designed to enhance journalism in some unique way. The 2013 visiting fellows are Hong Qu, a UX designer; Kate Smith, a lecturer in journalism at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland; and Daniel Eilemberg, the founder and editor-in-chief of Animal Político, a political website in Mexico.
