The Society for News Design has recognized the Nieman Foundation’s Web redesign with an Award of Excellence (small division) in its Best of Digital Design competition. Completed in the summer of 2014, the redesign was directed by the Boston-based design firm Upstatement as part of a comprehensive reorganization of Nieman’s online content to create a fully integrated family of Nieman sites and enhance the foundation’s ability to share and post content easily across publications.

Mike Swartz, a partner at Upstatement who played a lead role in the redesign, said: “Our goal was to design and build a system that would help Nieman showcase their excellent content and provide a platform for future growth. We tried to develop a design that was simple and let the content really shine while providing pathways across Nieman's network of sites. The result is a more cohesive user experience, surfacing more content for readers and exposing more of the foundation's reporting and thought leadership.”

Nieman’s responsive design integrates information about Nieman Fellowships with content produced by our three journalistic publications: Nieman Storyboard, Nieman Lab and Nieman Reports. Nieman Lab director Joshua Benton redesigned the Nieman Lab site.
