Nieman Reports has won an EPPY Award for the best web redesign/relaunch in the “under 1 million unique monthly visitors” category. Presented annually by Editor & Publisher, the EPPYs honor the best in digital media across 31 categories.
The Nieman Reports redesign was part of a larger institution-wide effort by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard to better integrate information about Nieman Fellowships with content produced by the foundation’s three journalistic publications: Nieman Storyboard, Nieman Lab and Nieman Reports.
Key areas of development for the project included streamlined navigation, unified branding and a new responsive design that displays well on all devices.
For the redesign, Nieman commissioned Boston-based Upstatement: Nieman Lab director Joshua Benton redesigned the Lab site. The result is a fully integrated family of Nieman endeavors and the ability to share and post content easily across publications.
Upstatement partner Mike Swartz commented: “Our goal was to design and build a system that would help Nieman showcase their excellent content and provide a platform for future growth. We tried to develop a design that was simple and let the content really shine while providing pathways across Nieman’s network of sites. The result is a more cohesive user experience, surfacing more content for readers and exposing more of the foundation's reporting and thought leadership.”
