Angus Thuermer, reporter turned CIA official, dies

As a top CIA public affairs official, Angus Thuermer described himself as the agency’s “spooksman’’ who officially gave “no comment’’ to inquiring reporters. But that didn’t mean Mr. Thuermer, 92, who died of pneumonia April 14, lacked for stories to tell. Just out of college in the late 1930s, he covered the eve of World War II from Berlin for the Associated Press before being interned by the Germans. He was a 1951 Nieman Fellow. Read more

Corchado to receive 2010 Lovejoy Award

Alfredo Corchado, a 2009 Nieman Fellow, has been chosen as the 2010 Elijah Lovejoy Award recipient. The award, established in 1952 at Maine's Colby College, is given annually to a member of the newspaper profession who has contributed to the country's journalistic achievement. Read more

Cobler and team receive SPJ Sigma Delta Chi Award

Chris Cobler, a 2006 Nieman Fellow, and his staff at the Victoria Advocate in Texas won the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award in Non-Deadline Reporting (Daily Circulation 1-50,000) for the series on “Fatal Funnel”, a story of Route 77 in Texas, notorious as a passageway for drugs and illegal immigrants. Chin’ono documentary up for BANFF award

"A Violent Response," a documentary by 2010 Global Health Fellow Hopewell Chin'ono, has been nominated for a BANFF World Television Award. The film—a look at Zimbabwe's post-election violence—will be aired in June on the BBC in the UK to mark the anniversary of the 2008 Zimbabwean elections. Read more

Kabral Blay-Amihere publishes memoirs

Kabral Blay-Amihere, chairman of National Media Commission in Ghana and a 1991 Nieman Fellow, recently published his third book, “Between the Lion and the Elephant: Memoirs of an African Diplomat.” The chronicles the achievements, challenges and experiences of the author as Ghana’s Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Cote d’Ivoire. Deborah Amos to receive Murrow award

Deborah Amos, a 1992 Nieman Fellow, will receive the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award/Radio Division on April 20 at Washington State University. Following the award presentation, Amos will exchange views about media ethics and responsibility in a roundtable discussion. Read more
