The Nieman Foundation today announced all named fellowships for the Nieman class of 2016. These fellowships are supported by foundation grants and endowed funds that provide financial assistance to journalists from the United States and abroad.
For the first time, Nieman will award the Anja Niedringhaus Nieman Fellowship for Visual Journalism to documentary photographer Andrea Bruce, whose work brings attention to people living in war and its aftermath as well as the social issues that are sometimes ignored and often ignited in war’s wake. The fellowship honors the memory of 2007 Nieman Fellow and AP photographer Anja Niedringhaus, who was shot and killed while on assignment in Afghanistan in the spring of 2014. Read more

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard is one of several national organizations that will host events in 2016 to celebrate the 100th awarding of the Pulitzer Prize. Four marquee events will take place in Florida, California, Texas and Massachusetts and each will focus on a particular aspect of Pulitzer history: social justice and equality; war, migration and the quest for peace; presidents and the press; and abuse of power. The Society for News Design has recognized the Nieman Foundation’s Web redesign with an Award of Excellence (small division) in its Best of Digital Design competition. Completed in the summer of 2014, the redesign was directed by the Boston-based design firm Upstatement as part of a comprehensive reorganization of Nieman’s online content to create a fully integrated family of Nieman sites and enhance the foundation’s ability to share and post content easily across publications.
