Fatima Tlisova, NF ’09, pays tribute to press freedom with President Obama

Fatima Tlisova was one of three journalists who joined President Obama at the White House on May 1, paying tribute to the work of journalists in dangerous places ahead of World Press Freedom Day. Tlisova, who works for the Voice of America’s Russian Service, has reported on military operations, corruption, and censorship in the North Caucasus region, and, in the line of reporting, has been attacked, kidnapped and tortured. She said President Obama’s message was paramount, stating that all “free voices matter...that criticizing the president, criticizing the government is not an act of treason, it is an act of patriotism, it helps every government.”
