Financial Highlights

Total revenue for the Nieman Foundation in fiscal year 2024 increased approximately 11.6% from FY 2023.

The main reasons for the increase were:

  1. The receipt of the second and third payments of a three-year $259,000 grant from Schmidt Futures funding the Schmidt Futures Nieman Fellowship for China Coverage, a joint Nieman-Associated Press program that provides journalists with China expertise the opportunity to enhance their coverage of China and U.S.-China policy issues.
  2. The receipt of the second payment of a gift to the Nieman Journalism Lab to fund two staff writer positions, one covering local news in the United States and the other reporting on the intersection of journalism and generative AI.
  3. An increase in interest income due to unexpended funds for both the Schmidt grant and Nieman Lab gift.
  4. An increase of 4.5% in the annual treasurer’s distribution from Harvard University.

The value of our investments increased approximately 4.4% from FY 2023 to FY 2024; our balance sheet remains strong, with over $165,000,000 in long-term investments.
