William Osgood Taylor II, a longtime friend and supporter of the Nieman Foundation, has died in Boston after a lengthy illness. Taylor was the fourth member of his family to run The Boston Globe and oversaw the sale of the paper to The New York Times Co. in 1993.
Nieman curator Bob Giles said “Bill was proud of his family’s long association with the Nieman Foundation. His enthusiastic and generous support made possible our annual Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers. He also took special pleasure in enabling the foundation’s new seminar room to be named for his father, Davis Taylor.”
As publisher of The Globe in the 1960s, Davis Taylor had worked with Nieman curator Dwight Sargent to raise $1.3 million to match a Ford Foundation grant that stabilized the Nieman Foundation finances at the time.
