Fellowships
Rosental Alves, NF ’88
Director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin
The impact that all international Nieman Fellows have in their own country is really a good contribution to democratic institutions, to the quality of journalism there and ultimately for having a better society, an open society. When you look into journalism, rapid changes that are going on now because of the digital revolution, you may be tempted to think that this [Nieman] enlightenment year is not that important because we are in the urgency of learning new tools. I would be very cautious in discarding this enlightenment, this intellectual growth as something secondary. I think both things are important and I think that is what is more valuable here: It’s coming to a great university and learn not only the latest tool or app, but growing as a human being, as a person who needs a better intellectual background to do better journalism.”
