Financial Highlights

Total revenue for the Nieman Foundation in fiscal year 2023 increased approximately 13.3% from FY 2022. The main reasons for the increase were (1) the receipt of the first payment of a three-year $259,000 grant from Schmidt Futures to fund a new Nieman-Associated Press fellowship that will provide journalists with China expertise the chance to enhance their coverage of China and U.S.-China policy issues; (2) a gift to the Nieman Journalism Lab to fund two new staff writer positions – one covering local news in the United States and the other reporting on the intersection of journalism and generative AI; and (3) an increase of 4.5% in the annual treasurer’s distribution from Harvard.

While the value of our investments decreased approximately 2.2% from FY 2022 to FY 2023, Nieman’s balance sheet remains strong, with over $158,000,000 in long-term investments.
