On the eve of South African journalist Nat Nakasa's reburial, Joe Thloloe, a 1989 Nieman Fellow, gave the inaugural Nakasa commemorative lecture. "Nat's life and struggle have been vindicated," Thloloe said. Nakasa, a 1965 Nieman Fellow, died in New York on July 14, 1965. He had just finished his Nieman year, but accepting the fellowship had cost him his citizenship in apartheid-era South Africa, making him a man with no country. Unable to return home, he was buried in New York, where his remains rested until this month.
