Join us to hear from Maria Ressa, a leading advocate for a free press and CEO and executive editor of Rappler.com, one of the top news organizations in the Philippines.
Ressa helped found Rappler in 2012 and has since been honored around the world for her courageous work fighting against disinformation, fake news and attempts to silence the free press, including repeated attacks by the Philippine government against Rappler itself.
In 2018, Ressa was one of a group of journalists collectively named as Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” for their dedicated pursuit of the truth. She additionally has won the prestigious Golden Pen of Freedom Award from the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), the Knight International Journalism Award from the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists, among many other honors.
Ressa has been a journalist in Asia for more than 30 years. She was CNN’s bureau chief in Manila then Jakarta, and became CNN’s lead investigative reporter focusing on terrorism in Southeast Asia. She is the author of “Seeds of Terror: An Eyewitness Account of al-Qaeda’s Newest Center of Operations in Southeast Asia” and “From Bin Laden to Facebook.”
Ressa is the subject of the documentary, A Thousand Cuts, which was featured at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is scheduled at the SXSW festival in March 2020. She was also featured in recent episodes of 60 Minutes and Amanpour & Co.
