During a ceremony at Walter Lippmann House at Harvard University on May 3, 2024, the Nieman Foundation presented three of its annual journalism awards to the 2024 winners and finalists.

The 2024 Winners:

• The I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence
  Jerry Mitchell, director and co-founder of the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting (MCIR)
• The Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism
  “Alone and Exploited,” a six-part series by New York Times reporter Hannah Dreier, exposed the hidden world and stunning scope of migrant child labor in the U.S. and the many policy failures that have led to a shadow workforce across the country.
• The Taylor Award for Fairness in Journalism
  Winner: “Stalled Justice,” a four-part Chicago Tribune investigation into the Cook County’s dysfunctional court system in Illinois, reported by Joe Mahr and Megan Crepeau.
  • Taylor Award finalists: Reporter Hannah Dreier’s hard-hitting, meticulously researched New York Time investigation “Alone and Exploited” and “The Mercy Workers,” a story by Marshall Project reporter Maurice Chammah, offers a rare look at a secretive profession of mitigation specialists who attempt to save prisoners from the death penalty.

After the awards were presented, Jerry Mitchell, Hannah Dreier and Joe Mahr spoke with moderator Wonbo Woo, about their work. Woo, a 2016 Nieman Fellow, is a producer and media consultant.
