During a ceremony at Walter Lippmann House at Harvard University on May 2, 2025, the Nieman Foundation presented three of its annual journalism awards.
The Winners
- The I..F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence:
Mark Trahant, journalist, author and journalism educator. Past editor of ICT (formerly Indian Country Today) - The Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism and The Taylor Award for Fairness in Journalism:
ProPublica for the skillfully reported series “Life of the Mother,” which reveals how state abortion bans in the U.S. have led to preventable deaths. - Taylor Award Finalists:
“Guilty of Grief,” a Miami Herald investigation into the systemic failures that led to the killing of a mentally ill young man by a Miami-Dade police officer and the serous consequences for his grieving mother when she sought justice and answers; and “Coming to America,” an intimate profile of Palestinian teenager Layan Albaz, who traveled alone from Gaza to Chicago to receive vital medical care after losing her legs in an Israeli airstrike.
After the awards were presented, ProPublica reporter Lizzie Presser, photographer Stacy Kranitz and Mark Trahant spoke with moderator Sarah Varney, a 2024 Nieman Fellow, about their work. Varney is founder and executive producer of Fountain Productions and a special healthcare correspondent for “PBS News Hour” and NPR.
