The Nieman class of 1994 honored Abdelhamid Benzine, editor of the independent daily newspaper Alger Republicain in Algeria, with the Lyons Award. Mr. Benzine has been fighting for a free press in his country. Pressure from the military government and from Muslim fundamentalists forced him into hiding and then into exile. His paper was forced to close in 1994.
