Chris Cobler, a 2006 Nieman Fellow, recently received the Editorial Achievement Award from the Texas Daily Newspaper Association at its annual convention. The award recognizes "courage and commitment to the newsroom and leadership in the community in advocating and pursuing openness and accessibility to government." GlobalPost.com, the news organization started by Charles Sennott, a 2006 Nieman Fellow, went live Jan. 12. The free Web site, supported by ads, went live Monday and will offer regular dispatches for an American audience to supplement coverage from news organizations still covering the world. Heath, and fellow Seattle Times reporter Christine Willmsen, unearth at least 155 hidden earmarks worth $3.5 billion in the 2008 defense bill and find that in many cases, earmarks are actually more secretive than they once were. David Heath and Seattle Times colleague Hal Bernton won the 2008 Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Coverage of Congress for their multi-platform series “The Favor Factory.” The Times series linked earmarked votes by Seattle-area lawmakers to campaign contributions. The Society of Professional Journalists announced Monday, April 14, the recipients of the 2007 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. Five Nieman alumni were among this year's winners, who were chosen from more than 1,000 entries in 48 categories including print, radio, television and online. Read more
The Boston Globe's Charles M. Sennott, Class of 2006, will be among a group of veteran foreign correspondents who will be joining Global News Enterprises LLC, the first US-based Web site devoted exclusively to international news, which is set to launch early next year. Read more
