FY17 - FY18 Financial Highlights

Total revenue for the Nieman Foundation increased approximately 5 percent in FY17 from FY16.  Several significant fiscal developments include:

  • A 4 percent increase in endowment returns made available for operations
  • Two non-federal sponsored grants – one from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and one from the Open Society Foundations
  • A 150 percent increase in gifts for current use, due in large part to the Knight News Match program*

While the value of our investments decreased approximately 4.5 percent from FY16 to FY17, our balance sheet remains strong, with almost $131,000,000 in long-term investments.

* Following a winter fundraising campaign, the Nieman Foundation received a grant of $25,000 from the Knight News Match program through the program’s fiscal sponsor, The Miami Foundation. The Nieman Foundation raised almost $73,000 through this campaign with generous donations made by many alumni and friends.

Also in 2017, Nieman received funding for two new fellowships:

In an effort to bolster quality journalism, 2016 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow Maya Baratz Jordan launched her “Trust the Press” campaign to raise money for six nonprofit journalism organizations, including the Nieman Foundation. Participants who purchase a “Trust the Press” T-shirt also support the work of National Public Radio (NPR), ProPublica, the Nieman Foundation, Columbia Journalism Review, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and Retro Report.

Development Report

The Nieman Foundation is grateful to the many individuals, foundations, journalism organizations and other groups that support its programs each year. These generous gifts help fund Nieman Fellowships, publications, journalism events and awards, conferences and other special projects that help educate journalists on campus and around the globe and help advance Nieman’s mission and long-term goals.

Those who wish to make a gift to the Nieman Foundation may make a donation online or send a check payable to the Nieman Foundation. All correspondence should be mailed to:
