Foundation Financials

FY14 Financial Highlights

As 2014 comes to a close, the Nieman Foundation’s balance sheet remains fiscally sound with a total of almost $133 million in long-term investments, up about 9 percent from FY13.

Total revenue increased by 6.8 percent over FY13, primarily due to:

  • A 2 percent increase in endowment returns made available for operations
  • Three non-federal sponsored grants (two from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and one from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation)
  • Approximately $100,000 in ticket sales for the Nieman Foundation’s 75th Anniversary weekend

Total expenses increased by 12 percent, due to 75th Anniversary costs, expenses related to the non-federal sponsored grants listed above and repairs to the Lippmann House.

Development Report

Gifts from individuals, foundations, journalism organizations and other groups help support Nieman Foundation programs each year, including Nieman Fellowships, journalism awards, outreach programs, conferences and other special projects that help educate journalists on campus and around the globe.

Nieman is deeply grateful to all who help carry out the foundation’s goals and our mission to “promote and elevate the standards of journalism and educate persons deemed specially qualified for journalism.”

Those who wish to make a gift to the Nieman Foundation may make a donation online or send a check payable to the Nieman Foundation at the address below.

The foundation is currently welcoming contributions to support the Anja Niedringhaus Nieman Fellowship for Visual Journalism, which honors 2007 Nieman Fellow Anja Niedringhaus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning AP photographer who was shot and killed while on assignment in Afghanistan in April 2014.
