Journalist Kari Howard joins Nieman Storyboard as editor

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard has named Kari Howard as the new editor of Nieman Storyboard, the foundation’s online publication that showcases exceptional narrative journalism and explores the craft of nonfiction storytelling. Howard joins Storyboard from the Los Angeles Times, where she worked since 1992, serving for the past four years as editor of the Times’ signature narrative journalism feature Column One. Howard raised Column One’s profile online, where it was rechristened Great Reads, and wrote the weekly Great Reads newsletter, which reached 45,000 subscribers. Read more

Nieman Conference Insists Narrative Matters in Turbulent Times

Attendance dipped to slightly over 500 compared to more than 900 in past years. Some had just lost jobs. A few others wondered how long they'd have a desk to come back to. But speakers at last weekend's Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism preached adaptation, not hand wringing. They said well-honed storytelling skills enhance print and online reporting and improve newspapers' woeful bottom lines. Read more
