Nieman News

The staff of The Seattle Times has won a George Polk Award for environmental reporting for their coverage of the Oso, Wash., mudslides. The awards committee highlighted two exemplary articles, both written in part by Ken Armstrong, a 2001 Nieman Fellow. Craig Welch, a Seattle Times staffer at the time and a 2007 Nieman Fellow, also took part in the Oso reporting effort. Both Armstrong and Welch have since moved on from The Seattle Times, Armstrong to The Marshall Project and Welch to National Geographic.

The prestigious George Polk Awards were established in 1948 to honor the slain CBS correspondent. The awards are presented by Long Island University.
