The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society have selected two journalists as the 2013-2014 Nieman-Berkman Fellows in Journalism Innovation. The fellowship is a collaboration between the two organizations designed to generate new ideas to advance quality journalism in the digital age. Read more

In a breaking news situation, journalists get an adrenaline rush. There is a palpable eagerness to get the scoop, to be the first to bring the story to the public. In today's world of social media, mobile phones, and real-time 24/7 news cycle, though, journalists face competition from all sides: eyewitness accounts, official sources, and even friends and family are sharing news before mainstream news institutions have "published" the official news story. New York Times reporter Sam Dolnick has won the 2012 Worth Bingham Prize for Investigative Journalism for his three-part series Unlocked: Inside New Jersey’s Halfway Houses.
During an exhaustive 10-month investigation of New Jersey’s privately run halfway houses, Dolnick discovered a broken and horribly flawed correctional system in which gang activity, drug use, sexual assaults and other violent behavior were commonplace and where lax security led to hundreds of annual escapes. While at large, some fugitives committed violent crimes, including murder, yet the state failed to punish the halfway house operators responsible for the runaways. Read more

The Nieman Journalism Lab has launched a new weekly podcast series, Press Publish, that will feature conversations with the people who are shaping the future of news. The project kicks off with Dan Sinker and Erin Kissane of Source, a Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project, discussing how they built a gathering place for news developers. In coming weeks, look for episodes with journalists, technologists, business managers, entrepreneurs and academics as they discuss their ideas and projects. Read more

The Nieman Foundation has selected three journalists as Visiting Fellows for the 2013 calendar year. Each will spend a period of time at Harvard University to work on a project designed to enhance journalism in some unique way. The 2013 visiting fellows are Hong Qu, a UX designer; Kate Smith, a lecturer in journalism at Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland; and Daniel Eilemberg, the founder and editor-in-chief of Animal Político, a political website in Mexico. Editor and author James Geary, a 2012 Nieman Fellow, has been selected as the deputy curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism. In this position he will serve as editor of Nieman Reports, oversee other Nieman print and online publications and manage a range of duties related to the Nieman Fellowship program and the foundation’s journalism outreach efforts.
