The Nieman, which helped open so many doors for me in my career, also unlocked doors within my mind on how to approach people of prestige and power and also simply the great questions to ask. The Nieman year has continued to make me a more global journalist, simply understanding the problems and the people who report on subjects around the world because you are living with them for a year. You really get to know the press systems of Spain, and the [former] Soviet Union, and South America in a way that would’ve taken me years to acquire. But because you had a personal tour guide to their countries’ foibles and achievements it was extraordinary.”
