    New this year! Apply for a Nieman Fellowship using our online application.
    U.S. Fellowships, including the Reynolds Fellowship in Community Journalism and the Arts & Culture Reporting Fellowship: Applications must be postmarked on or before Jan. 31, 2010.

    International Fellowships: Applications must be postmarked on or before Dec. 15, 2009.

    Global Health Reporting Fellowships: Applications must be postmarked on or before Jan. 31, 2010.

    Matching Gift Program for the William Woo Fund
    Martha Shirk, widow of William Woo, Nieman Class of 1967, will match up to $5,000 for any contribution made to the William Woo Internship Fund before the Asian American Journalists Associations 2009 National Convention in Boston, Aug. 12-15. The fund supports scholarships and internships that encourage students to enter the field of journalism. Those interested in supporting the fund may donate online. (Under AAJA National Scholarships & Internships, designate “William Woo Internship Fund.”)

    A Chinese-born journalist, Woo become the first Asian American to edit a major American newspaper, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, in 1986. After 40 years in the newsroom, Woo went on to teach journalism at Stanford University, where he wrote the book “Letters from the Editor: Lessons on Journalism and Life” for future journalists.

    The UNITY: Journalists of Color organization is studying how the ongoing shift from traditional to digital media is affecting diversity in emerging digital newsrooms. Can diversity be maintained? And how can it best be protected? The group would like your input. If you are a professional journalist, please participate in a short survey on the topic.

    Jane Mayer and George Packer in conversation
    The J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project and the Columbia Journalism School presented a conversation on BlogTalkRadio between celebrated New Yorker writers Jane Mayer and George Packer. Mayer's latest book, "The Dark Side: Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals," won the 2009 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize.

    This Friday: Deadline for the $10K Taylor Family Award for Fairness
    Friday is the deadline for submissions for the Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers. While the person in your newsroom who used to assemble contest entries was probably laid off recently, there’s still time for you to package up your own. First prize is $10,000; $1,000 for each of the top two finalists.
