Nieman Fellowship Program
How to Apply
Nieman Foundation > How to Apply > Eligibility and Application Forms > International Fellowships > International Criteria

Before you begin the process of applying, please be sure you meet the eligibility requirements for your application to be considered.

I am fluent in speaking, reading and writing English. All Nieman seminars and Harvard classes are in English. Proficiency in English is necessary to benefit fully from the Nieman experience.

I have five or more years of work experience as a full-time professional journalist. Work done as a university student does not count toward experience. Applications from candidates with less than five years of full-time professional journalism experience will not be considered.

I work for the general-interest news media, or I am a full-time freelance news journalist. Applications received from candidates working in public relations or for organizations that do not produce general-interest news will not be considered.

My employer will give me a leave of absence for the academic year, or I am a freelance journalist.

Within the past two years, I have not participated in a fellowship or leave of absence from my work that lasted six months or longer.
